Life with bowel cancer

KatB

No appetite

I haven't eaten properly for days. I just can't. Nothing appeals and if I try to eat I just feel nauseous. Anyone got any tips for getting some food in my?

Lawsey

Hey Kat B me too - chemo makes me physically sick. Do try the anti sickness pills. The lot - keep fluid by your bed, chair etc - try the odd biscuit soup any single think you can stomach. I try even if slice of toast.only thing i ate yesterdat Start small. Dont try to tackle whole plates of food. Sheer grit. Also i sometimes eat and an hour later take a sleeping pill (nitall something fairly natural) so some food is kept down and i get the break from vomiting. I ramble main point you may not be tempted by fluid or food but get it down you. Strength to you :x::x::x::x:

Hi @KatB and @Lawsey, so sorry to hear how you are both struggling but PLEASE seek advice from your specialist nurses and/or oncology team as soon as possible. You should not have to endure this level of side effect; there are many types of anti-nausea medications available although to some extent it is trial and error. One gold star one is Emend ( Aprepitant) that has been prescribed to many of us with very good effects. Please do not suffer in silence, take very good care, Kim :x::x:

Lawsey

I have a range 3 different ones. Which i take and perhaps if i didnt it would be even worse. But to take just one effective tablet would make sense. Your care had also heartened me. THANK YOU Kim :x::x::x:

You are very welcome @Lawsey ...... I do have to come clean though and say I still take two other anti-nausea tablets, - Dexamethasone for two days and Domperidone for three days. However this, together with Aprepitant does mean the nausea is very under control and my appetite is only slightly affected. I am happy with this regime as it is preferable to the severe vomiting, dehydration and 7 days hospitalisation that I experienced before! Take very good care, Kim :x::x:

Lawsey

Hi Kim, thank you again, the next round I will try to be more structured, it is confusing with the different anti sickness ones, shame there is not just one single tablet one can take. Very sorry about the hospitalisation - that was horrible for you - today e.g day 6 after infusion I do feel a bit better - how are you fairing KatB? The best of wishes and hopes

I take domperidone and ondansetron, they second one is the best but they seem to keep the sickness at bay. Have you tried sucking on boiled sweets? I find cheno generally gives me a salty film in my mouth and sweets take the horrid taste away. :x: :x:

Hi. I too had the 2 lots of anti nausea tabs and it is confusing what to take when but do keep with them for the few days. I was told that it is easier to keep nausea at bay, than it is to treat it when it happens. My partner found an app called Medisafe which you can use to plug in your meds and the times to take and it is like an mini alarm clock to remind you. I found this quite useful especially if I was out and about. Hope all goes well :x::x:

Hello Katb, the advice on anti-sickness is good, it’s what I used. I was also prescribed high calorie ‘forti’ type drinks. They are small in size but have a lot of calories, and in different flavours would recommend you speak to your GP to get them prescribed. I also made high protein drinks from powder. You can get them at sports retailers or on the internet. Remember these difficulties are short term, things do get better, I know that I’ve been through it all. Totally clear now of nasties after 18 months chemoradio and surgery. Hugs and positive energies to you.

Chas

I just checked the drinks I used were fortijuice. They were ideal for me. Hope this helps.

CossC

Yes I had them too. Mine were Fortisips (can recommend the mocha one - bit like a choco coffee milkshake). Give them a go please as they can help top your food intake and are like meal in a glass when you dont feel like chewing or being bothered. Complan is another one which can help

@KatB Hi. I too suffered with hideous nausea, I had the roles Royce of anti sickness but still no good. In the end I was put on a 24 hour 7 days a week anti sickness driver which did help eleviate it. The community nurses are on call day and night if you need an anti sickness injection they were amazing. Good luck. It doesn't last forever I promise :x::x:
